Tending to Your Dreaming Intelligence

Dreams as Common Ground: Part 3

In Part 1, we discovered that dreaming intelligence is always working—in our bodies, our relationships, our moments of sudden knowing.

In Part 2, we learned that dreams aren’t optional—they’re biological and spiritual necessities for survival.

Now, the question is: how do we tend to this intelligence? And what happens when we do?

Tending to Your Dreaming Intelligence

What if learning to pay attention to our dreams—both sleeping and waking—isn’t just about understanding ourselves better, but about honouring a fundamental human need that connects us all?

What if tending to our dreams means first healing our relationship with sleep and dreaming itself ( more restful states ) , creating sacred space for the darkness and rest from which meaningful dreams grow?

But tending to dreams goes deeper than sleep hygiene or dream recall techniques. It’s about cultivating a relationship with the mysterious intelligence that emerges when we surrender our waking control. When we tend to our dreams, we’re really tending to our capacity for communion—with the unknown parts of ourselves, with the wisdom that moves through our bodies, with the creative force that connects us to something larger than our individual and known consciousness. This process happens all day long! And we do not need night-time dreams to tap into and follow our creative intelligence.

From Understanding to Becoming

I work with clients who can analyze their childhood, name patterns, explain anxiety – and nothing changed. They just had more knowledge of themselves. Often I will ask clients to tell me a dream or I will simply ask them to notice what their body is doing – in the moment ( either is a doorway into the dreaming ) Instead of interpreting dreams or the un intentional movements  I ask clients to feel into and become like a figure in their dream.  Move more like the figure in the dream or make the movement of you or head a little more.  Embody it. And in as the client enters into that experience something shifts.  They are experiencing the creative process – living it in the moment! Understanding is good, learning how to feel into and live out your creative process more completely is perhaps a more complete or wholistic way of becoming yourself?

For me dreamwork has always been sacred work and with the inspirational work of teachers like Arnold Mindell ( and others ), we can discover the sacred in this very moment! It is right here. now!  In learning to listen to our dreaming bodies, we’re learning to listen to our deepest nature—that part of us that knows things our rational mind cannot grasp, that speaks in symbols and sensations, that connects us to the living intelligence of the world itself. We’re learning to trust the wisdom that emerges from darkness, from rest, from the spaces beneath and between our thoughts. This work encourages and invites a bottom up, top down and left – right integration. It is also deeply liberatory!

“In a culture that values productivity over presence, analysis over intuition, tending to our dreams becomes an act of rebellion—and of remembering.”

We remember that we are more than our achievements, deeper than our anxieties, more connected than our isolation suggests. We remember that healing happens not just through effort and understanding, but through surrender and communion with the mystery of who we really are. This practice takes you home – to yourself. A being deeply immersed in a living sentient world and perhaps universe!

Sometimes the most personal thing is the most universal—and the most necessary.

From Understanding to Experience: Dreaming Forwards

Over the past three weeks, we’ve explored:

  • How dreaming intelligence connects us all
  • Why we literally can’t function without dreams
  • What it means to tend to this sacred intelligence

But reading about dreaming intelligence is one thing. Experiencing it is something else entirely.

Most of us have spent our lives analyzing our dreams—looking backwards to understand what they mean, where they came from, what past experiences they’re trying to process. We treat dreams like puzzles to be solved, messages to be decoded, symptoms to be interpreted.

But what if we’ve been looking in the wrong direction?

Drop into your dreaming process – it’s right here.

And. Drop me a line if you’re interested in learning how to flow though, around or under the edges of your known world to a more complete ( and evolving ) view of yourself and other in this awesome world and universe we live in.
